How to style a girls' party dress
Styling a child is mostly subtraction. The dress is the statement; everything else should make it easier to wear.
The short answer
Let the dress carry the look. Choose plain flat shoes in a neutral tone, keep hair simple, add at most one small accessory, and plan a layer for temperature. Anything more competes with the dress and usually gets removed within an hour.
Shoes first, because they decide the evening
- · Flat or very low heel — children run, and party floors are polished.
- · Neutral ivory, blush, tan or black rather than a contrasting colour.
- · Broken in beforehand. New shoes on the day is the most common avoidable mistake.
Hair that survives three hours
Elaborate styling looks beautiful for the first photograph and untidy for every one after. A simple half-tie, a soft braid or brushed-out hair with a single clip holds up far better across a celebration.
One accessory, not four
A small hair clip or a fine bracelet is enough. Layered necklaces, headbands and bags at once turn an elegant dress into a costume, and each item is one more thing to lose.
Plan the layer in advance
A fine cardigan, bolero or shawl chosen to match the dress looks intentional. The jacket grabbed from the car at the last minute does not.
Questions we are asked
- What shoes go with a tulle party dress?
- Plain flat ballet shoes or soft leather sandals in ivory, blush or tan. Keep the tone close to the dress so the eye stays on the silhouette.
- Should a child wear tights under a party dress?
- In cooler weather, fine opaque tights in a neutral tone work well and add warmth without altering the look. In warm weather, skip them — the dress is already lined.
